Researchers could apply solutions containing Ethylphenidate to a membrane infused with dopamine or norepinephrine protein transporters and measure the efficacy it has upon them. Affinity profiles for Ethylphenidate for these two transporter proteins could be analysed in the same way as the above, however, by performing a competitive binding assay with an appropriate chemical. All of the above should be performed in vitro.

Ethylphenidate may be used as a primary reagent for chemistry experiments. It may also be used as a chemical reference for forensics or toxicologists for GC/MS, NMR, FTIR or HPLC analysis libraries.
